Support small business this Christmas

02 Dec 2015

T’is the season where we put our thinking caps on and imagine how to really make our loved ones smile on Christmas morning. We know it’s a bit of a cliché but we really do believe that when it comes to gift giving it’s the thought that counts.

As accountants naturally we will tell you to think more and spend less but when it comes to Christmas a thoughtful gift vs an expensive one can be just as meaningful. We also believe that we as a nation should be supporting small businesses who are our friends, our neighbours and our relatives.

So let’s ignore the festive high street circus for a just moment and turn our attention to some Small Business Heroes who can provide you with something unique this Christmas…

Something for the boys

Let’s face it, when it comes to men gift giving can get a bit tedious; cue socks and aftershave. No-one wants to give a mundane gift but often for men Christmas morning can result in a little bit of an anti-climax. Not anymore.

When Robert Middleton quit his job in pensions to travel Scotland and tick off all of its breweries on his way little did he know that he was about to answer the prayers of anyone faced with buying a present for a man.

Not only did Robert pen a tale about his journey when he settled back in London, he also opened a brewery! So this Christmas why not treat Dad to an inspirational tale and a six pack of Orbit Beers finest craft brew.

Orbit 2

Find out more about Orbit Brewing on their website, buy their beer online and pick up the book, The Tea Leaf Paradox from Amazon to learn more about the ultimate man tour. And if you find yourself in London be sure to visit one of the brewery’s open days too! Man presents sorted for life.

The funny gym bunny

We all know her, our gym going friend with a personality as strong as her upper body. And now we know what to get her for Christmas thanks to Hey Holla. In their words, not ours, for “ladies who lunge”.

Hey Holla 2

And Hey Holla are not only great for gym bunny’s either, anyone with a sense of humour and a need for a tote bag can get in on the action. That’s what happens when two trendy gals collaborate; we love this brand.

Hey Holla 3

Check out the Hey Holla website to browse the entire collection and laugh as you assign each slogan to its most appropriate recipient. There’s accessories too so make up a Hey Holla gift box or stock up on stocking fillers for all of the girls on your list.

The Eco Warrior

Let’s face it, Christmas, as pretty as it is, is also synonymous with manmade materials and a lot of waste which is why we would like eco-friendly Thamon London to make it onto your shopping list this season.

Thamon London brings us vegan friendly luggage and accessories made from real leaves! Yes, we know, it’s amazing!

Treat your veggie friends, your environmentally mental mother, or your green fingered father to something a bit different this Christmas that we can guarantee they’ll be flashing to their friends down at the farmers market. They’ve got everything from iPhone covers and bags to wallets and laptop cases.

Look out for Thamon London products at Christmas markets or check out their Facebook page for more info. Feel wholesome and satisfied with this gift.

About the author

Originally graduating with a degree in geography from Edinburgh University, Keir claims that he was then tricked into becoming an accountant by one of the UK's top 5 accountancy practices. The deception extended to the usual training in audit and associated activities.

Keir subsequently worked in a number of advisory roles with clients including in the energy trading, pharmaceuticals and financial services sectors.

He loves working at Accounts & Legal because of the variety of work and clients, the excellent team ethos and morale, the importance placed on genuinely helping and being useful for clients and because he believes what he does matters to clients and helps the firm.

Keir's primary role is to ensure that new clients with complex businesses or needs are on-boarded in the best way and he is a "trouble shooter" both for clients and where complex issues arise internally. He also helps the accounting teams strive to improve what we do for clients, whether processes or services.

When not debiting or crediting, Keir has a penchant for fixing old buildings, skiing, surfing and cycling.
