Client of the Month: Smith's Hair Studio

06 Oct 2016

Smith’s Hair Studio is yet another piece of the tapestry which keeps London at the cutting edge. Vibrant, on trend and with playlists that keep the atmosphere happening and the clients coming back, Nathan Smith has built his business from the ground up. At only twenty-three Nathan Smith is one of our youngest clients, but is a thriving example that raw skill and entrepreneurial drive can be a substitute for time in the ring.

Operating a flexible business model

Not only has Nathan pushed his business to be a success, he operates a flexible business model that offers his clients a diverse range of styles and skills under one roof. He has achieved this by offering talented stylists not a job, but the opportunity to run their own business within the Smith Hair Studio brand.

Instead of following the traditional salon business model, where an individual invests their capital, fits out a shop and employs several hair-dressers, Nathan operates a striped back lean and nimble business model that encourages entrepreneurs, like himself, to build their personal brand within his salon. He achieves this by effectively renting out a seat in his studio, where fledgling talent and experienced professionals alike can grow their name, expand their skills and work free to be their own boss. Smith’s partners are responsible for their own revenue, overheads and reputation able to compete with London’s best studios.

The variety of Smith’s partners are tantamount to the success of his business model with all ages and experiences, styles and skills available under one roof and the Smith's Hair Studio brand. The business’s client base speaks for itself, attracting not only locals, but clients from across London with string of VIP’s choosing to Smith’s Hair Studio to get their trim. As one of his partners put it you might leave looking like you ‘got your trim by god himself’.

About the author

Originally graduating with a degree in geography from Edinburgh University, Keir claims that he was then tricked into becoming an accountant by one of the UK's top 5 accountancy practices. The deception extended to the usual training in audit and associated activities.

Keir subsequently worked in a number of advisory roles with clients including in the energy trading, pharmaceuticals and financial services sectors.

He loves working at Accounts & Legal because of the variety of work and clients, the excellent team ethos and morale, the importance placed on genuinely helping and being useful for clients and because he believes what he does matters to clients and helps the firm.

Keir's primary role is to ensure that new clients with complex businesses or needs are on-boarded in the best way and he is a "trouble shooter" both for clients and where complex issues arise internally. He also helps the accounting teams strive to improve what we do for clients, whether processes or services.

When not debiting or crediting, Keir has a penchant for fixing old buildings, skiing, surfing and cycling.
